What is Moderate Sedation?

Moderate Sedation, often referred to as Conscious Sedation, is a dental sedation method where the patient is placed in a state of profound calm and relaxation but can still be woken up easily and respond to necessary commands. We achieve this level of sedation using medications that are administered intravenously. The goal of Moderate Sedation is to make you feel comfortable and relaxed, significantly reducing anxiety and discomfort during dental procedures.

Safety: Moderate Sedation vs. Deep Sedation or General Anesthesia

One of the significant advantages of opting for Moderate Sedation over Deep Sedation or General Anesthesia is the enhanced safety profile it offers. With Moderate Sedation, patients maintain their ability to breathe independently and respond to verbal commands, minimizing the risks associated with deeper levels of sedation where such autonomy is compromised. This safety aspect is critical, especially for patients with certain medical conditions or those who are apprehensive about undergoing deep sedation or general anesthesia. In the very rare case that a patient needs (or for any reason wants) a deeper level of sedation, we recommend that they consider a hospital setting for their procedure to maximize their safety.

Our practice adheres to the strictest safety standards, ensuring that our patients receive the highest level of care. We are fully licensed and inspected by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to provide Moderate Sedation in our office. Our team is extensively trained and experienced in administering sedation, constantly monitoring patients to ensure their safety and comfort throughout the procedure. We have advanced equipment to ensure your safety including cardiac EKG monitors, heart rate monitors, blood oxygen monitors, respiratory CO2 monitors, emergency supplemental oxygen, defibrillator, and a wide range of emergency medications.

The Experience: Relaxation and Limited Memory of the Procedure

A unique aspect of undergoing a dental procedure with Moderate Sedation is that many patients report having little to no memory of the treatment. This is particularly beneficial for those who experience dental anxiety, as it removes the fear associated with painful or uncomfortable memories of dental work. You'll be in a state of such relaxation that the procedure will seem to pass quickly, and you'll likely have only vague recollections of the experience.

Planning for Your Visit: The Need for a Ride Home

It's important to note that, due to the sedative effects of the medication, patients will not be able to drive themselves home after the procedure. We advise all our patients to plan accordingly and arrange for a responsible adult to accompany them home. This is a necessary step to ensure your safety as the sedative effects may take some time to completely wear off.

Why Choose Us for Your Sedation Dentistry Needs?

Our dental practice is committed to offering an environment where safety, comfort, and the highest standard of dental care are paramount. By choosing Moderate Sedation at our practice, you're opting for a dental experience that is both comfortable and safe, overseen by a team that prioritizes your well-being. He will ensure all of your questions are answered and you feel fully comfortable before, during and after your procedure.

Sedation Surgery Logistics

We require a prior consultation to evaluate your airway and any medical conditions to ensure that sedation dentistry is safe for you, fully plan out your dental treatment and discuss all of this with you in person. Note that for your safety, you will be required to avoid food and drink prior to the procedure (exact timing to be discussed when the appointment is made). As such we tend to schedule sedation surgeries in the morning.
